Homemade Soft Pretzels

Homemade Soft Pretzels are a delightful snack that brings the warmth of freshly baked bread right to your kitchen. With their golden-brown crust and soft, chewy interior, these pretzels are perfect for game days, family movie nights, or any time you crave a delicious treat. They’re surprisingly easy to make with just a few simple ingredients and steps, and they pair wonderfully with mustard or butter for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 1 egg yolk (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir until combined. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Let it rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  4. Shape pretzels: Divide the dough into eight pieces, roll each into long ropes (24 inches), and twist them into pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil & bake: Boil water with baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place on parchment-lined sheets. Brush with egg yolk and bake at 450°F for about 12 minutes until golden brown.
